The Lair of The Megalord

Gather around, kids, and let me tell you a story of how this piece came to be. This all happened on hitRECord, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s collaborative online production company.

According to “Jelly Babies Origins” written by lidan, this was how the collaboration started.

“I was gchatting with librarygirl6 and showed her a picture of my jelly babies, calling them creepy, that I had tweeted because wirrow had mentioned them and she said ‘this reminds me of cannibalism’ and came up with the idea that we should make a jelly baby version of A Modest Proposal, which we then took to twitter, where Metaphorest had mentioned a possible candy sequel to Strawberry Bootlaces using jelly babies. Then Day Glo got on board and tagooey made the collab, where she posted the original A Modest Proposal text, based on librarygirl6’s suggestion, which Metaphorest rewrote with a jelly babies flare (Metaphorest hadn’t read the original until today! Look at hitRECorders teaching each other things :D ) and I made a little scene using my jelly babies to potentially make this some sort of stop motion thing (and to show everyone what jelly babies actually are) and then Day Glo posted an amazing reading. So, yeah, that’s what hitRECorders can do in a day with a crazy idea on twitter and some spare time.”

So that’s how the story began. But there’s more to it! Around the same time the collaboration was starting, lidan skyped me and was like “you should score this once it gets a reading!” She then linked me to a twitter conversation about Jelly Babies and cannibals and I was highly confused and jokingly said yes. Later, she informed me that Day Glo’s reading had been featured on the site and was like “SERIOUSLY MEGAN SCORE THIS NOW.” So, after listening to a bunch of Edward Elgar for inspiration, I did. I used synthesized instruments, because, sadly, I do not have an orchestra at my disposal. I also released a request for people to record themselves playing instruments and uploaded sheet music to the site. Joe liked my score and featured it, which really helped me find instrumentalists. With live recordings from myself, yes-you-am, ashlaaa, raquelpspinto, and my friend Evan Fazio, I was able to mix everything together and create this version of the piece.

This collaboration really highlights how awesome hitRECord can be. I love that so many of my friends have been involved in it and I can’t wait to see where this collaboration goes!
